lyrics

If someone were to try to define
The staggered state of my history
Then they might just try to describe
The gnarled shape of an old maple tree
Which had been struck in it's prime
Earning a scar of solid permanency
By a lighting bolt from the sky
That crashed like the beautiful sea
But there in the pitch of its heart
Somewhere down in the deep
Is practiced the strongest of arts
In the dark like the love between you and me

Suddenly the flaw in my bole
Which had knotted me so concussively
Didn't seem so hard to console
Enshrined in my inner sacristy
As years passed I grew to enfold
The strength that the whorl had given to me
My branches reached for the glow
Sunlight giving strength to feed
But there in the pith of my heart
Somewhere down in the deep mystery
Is practiced the darkest of arts
Strong like the love between you and me

Someday the tractor will cough to life
And roll over the hill to come for me
Thus ending all of my strife
As my rotting roots are pulled so free
Free of the stony soil and free of the knife
Free of the burrowing in my cavities
The freshest air on my core feels so right
Sweeter than any lasting memory
But there in the pit of my art
No longer enrobed in strata of me
Is exposed the hardest of hearts
In the light like the love between you and me
Is exposed the hardest of hearts
And it's strong like the love between you and me
